12 Preventative Strategies Against Viral Infections (Beyond Hygiene)

1. Sleep - The first 4 hours of sleep, ideally starting at or before 10p, is when our bodies do the most healing, immune modulation and cellular detoxification. Going to sleep late and/or with a full stomach will greatly reduce the body’s ability to maintain a strong immune defense. 7.5-8.5 hrs. total is ideal for most people.

2. Breath - Covid-19 is predominantly a lower respiratory infection (lungs). Utilize time every day to test your lungs by taking several deep inhalations and exhalations with a breath practice or jogging/aerobic exercise. Take in fresh air each day. (Yes, go outside unless you currently have contagious symptoms). Maintain distance but go for a jog or a hike. Or just stand in the yard and do a breathing exercise.

3. Sun & Vitamins D+A – It is well known that viral infections are far less common during the sunny warmer months of the year and more common during winter and spring. This is mainly due to variations in sun exposure. Yes, vitamin D is crucial for maintaining a strong immune system but supplementing with little to no sun exposure is not the same as getting adequate sun. We are into spring now so getting outside and getting sunlight on your skin is highly beneficial. Still its important to continue to supplement with Vitamin D and take it with Vitamin A. The two have an important relationship in that they both symbiotically enhance their effects of immune function but if taken one without the other can lead to mild toxicity. A&D are fat-soluble so if you have any issues with low stomach acid/digesting fats (common in elderly) is best to take them with HCL or ACV and lipase.

4. Glutathione – One of the most important antioxidants responsible for maintaining a healthy immune system especially for protecting against viral infection. In generally healthy humans it is naturally produced endogenously. Though after the age of 45 (or with otherwise younger health compromised) individuals have a rapid decline in their levels, which can result in a weak immune system and a far lengthier recovery from illnesses. This may be the key factor that makes elderly more susceptible to covid-19. The most effective way to supplement is with Liposomal Glutathione or S-Acetyl Glutathione (not common reduced form). If the infection has compromised the lungs (pneumonia) then Glutathione can be nebulized (seek a professional for guidance on this).

5. Zinc – Several years of research and evidence to show that zinc treatment applied at a therapeutic dose and in the right form has the potential to drastically improve the clearance of both chronic and acute viral infections, as well as their accompanying pathologies and symptoms. Deficiency is common. Zinc is water-soluble and absorbs best on an empty stomach.

6. Quercetin - studies indicate that quercetin can act as an antiviral agent for several known viruses, HIV, polio, SARS, H1N1 and other respiratory infections. It works by reducing the ability of a virus to infect cells, inhibiting the ability of infected cells to replicate and reproduce and reducing resistance of infected cells to pharmaceutical drug therapy. The basic effect of quercetin’s systemic, multifaceted interference could be to block viral activity at every level of its existence—a potentially powerful neutraceutical therapy that could be utilized for many conditions.

7. Vitamin C – The most common problem with C supplementation is the recommended dosage labeling which is based on the bare minimum to prevent “scurvy”. So people throw out vit. C and say it doesn’t work. Ignore the labeling. Find a 1000 mg vit. C (better – buffered, ideal to prevent stomach upset. Best – liposomal C) and take it throughout the day. With no symptoms, then 1-2x a day is adequate. At early onset, take 1000mg every 2-3 hours. You can’t overdose. Whatever your body doesn’t utilize is eliminated via urine. (which you are welcome to drink if that’s part of your strategy. If anything you’ll save a little $) Also very important is to not take vit. C with glucose containing foods (starchy carbs like bread, grains, potatoes, etc.) which can inhibit vit. C from being absorbed. (the real cause of scurvy)

8. Magnesium – involved in nearly every function of the human body, magnesium is a vital mineral and deficiencies can lead to several health issues including inadequate immune function. Deficiency is common. Make magnesium a staple supplement. It will make almost all other supplements more effective. Most absorbable forms include Mag. Glycinate, L-Threonate and Taurate. Most other forms act more as a laxative than anything else. Can also absorb transdermally by taking an Epsom salt bath, magnesium oil or swimming in the ocean often.

9. Selenium - Adequate dietary selenium is essential for the activity of virtually all arms of the immune system. Deficiency can lead to increased viral oxidative stress/inflammation, increased viral damage which could also lead to mutations (new viral strains). Easiest and safest way to get dietary selenium is by eating 3-4 brazil nuts a day. I wouldn't recommend a supplement as too much selenium can be toxic.

10. Immune Boosting Mushroom Extracts/Teas – Chaga, Turkey Tail & Reishi
Polysaccharides peptides found in these mushrooms have been shown to augment the immune system’s ability to combat both viral and bacterial infections by promoting the creation of white blood cells, one of the body’s primary means of defense. Turkey tail also contains krestin (PSK) which stimulates and repress different immune responses in unique ways. For this reason, turkey tail is an excellent choice for regulating immune systems and shows evidence in being an effective treatment for viral infections like HIV and HPV. So far, no studies on its effects for respiratory infections such as SARS. But I say, eating some mushrooms can’t hurt.

11. Antiviral Herbal Extracts, Tinctures & Teas - Oregano, Olive Leaf, Goldenseal, Echinacea, Lemon Balm, Astragulus and Elderberry.
12. No processed foods and sweets, cigarettes, alcohol – these are all well known immune suppressors. If you aren’t going to abstain, then at least limit to as little as possible.
